  23. Discussion:

  25. The meeting began by re-evaluating what the group is trying to do.  The
  26. group was originally developing a set of requirements/recommendations
  27. for a network information services infrastructure.  The last meeting
  28. took us in a different direction which produced a draft of guidelines
  29. for Network Information Centers (NICs).  This meeting began with re-
  30. assessing if this was the appropriate direction.  The group decided that
  31. the first step in defining a network information services infrastructure
  32. is to define what a NIC is and the function it performs.  This will
  33. ensure some minimum level of service from NICs in the community.  The
  34. next step is to establish some guidelines for sharing information
  35. between NICs.

  37. The group agreed to take the existing draft guidelines document and
  38. expand it to more accurately define and describe a NIC. The information
  39. about existing NICs (discussed at our first meeting) will also be
  40. incorporated.

  42. The group then defined the audience for the revised document.  The
  43. stated audience will include existing NICs, people wanting to start
  44. NICs, Network Operations Centers (NOCs), and funding agencies.  The
  45. stated purpose of the document is to establish a base set of
  46. requirements for establishing services and to assist those considering
  47. implementing a new NIC. The ultimate goal is to make it easier for users
  48. to get information from NICs.  The remaining time was spent defining the
  49.

  68. The session ended with agreement to the following action plan:

  71.    o A new draft will be distributed to the NISI mailing list within the
  72.      next 2 weeks.
  73.    o The document will be discussed and reviewed on the mailing list.
  74.    o The draft will be revised based on comments received (Volunteer
  75.      revisors:
  76.      Marc Sheldon, Gary Malkin, Joan Thompson, Karen McKelvey).
  77.    o The draft will be distributed to the USWG mailing list for
  78.      comments.
  79.    o A near final-form document will be ready prior to the next IETF
  80.      meeting in March.
